Win with my "Back to the Beginning" Book Giveaway! 29/09/2010

I like winning.  I like winning books even more.  Since I've been lucky enough to win two books recently, I's like to pass on the good karma and give away a prize of my own!

Love them or hate them, book series* are incredibly popular.  I always feel a little sad when I finish reading a book, because I'll miss the characters (until I read it again!), but with book series, I get to enjoy the characters for so much longer.  I've chosen some books that you may or may not have read, but that all take you back to the beginning of a series.

The winner will get to choose one of:
  • Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness: "Alanna: the first adventure" (possibly my favourite YA fantasy series ever)
  • Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials: "Northern Lights" (don't judge this book by the movie, The Golden Compass. This book is pure genius)
  • Anne McCaffery and Margaret Bell's Acorna Series: "Acorna: The Unicorn" (unicorns in space! seriously how cool is that?)
  • C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia Series: "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" (does this really need explaining?)
  • Terry Brooks's The Sword of Shannara Trilogy: "The Sword of Shannara" (epic fantasy at its best)
  • Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments: "City of Bones" (A prequel Clockwork Angel has just been released, so if you haven't read the series, now's your chance to catch up!)
You may notice a theme with the above... YA... fantasy... What can I say? I love both so much!

To win:
  • Leave a comment on this page that lets me know what your favourite book series (of all time!) is (note: you have to do this to enter).
  • For extra entries, please fill out the form below.
Competition is open internationally.  You do not have to be a blog follower to win (although it would be nice!).  There will be one winner, who will get a choice of one of the stated books.

Winner will be drawn Friday, October 15th (NZT).

*By "series" I'm encompassing trilogies, quartets or anything else with more than one book that follows the same characters

What a collection! Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series is the only one of the bunch that I've read, but I've heard great things about the others. :D

Hey fellow Voice member :) Great contest. Hmm, favorite series of all time...But there's so many! One series I do go back to over and over again is Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara series - great to see you've got it on the list :)

It's hard to pick a favorite series of all time as so many great ones can't be compared. I would have to say Harry Potter just because it really opened up the world of YA Fantasay for me and acted as a doorway to many more enjoyable reads in that genre.

I haven't read many YA series, tho I have lots on my 'to read' list. My all time favourite series has to be The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb I think.

Choose my favourite series of all time? The Discworld books win by sheer volume of awesome, but I'm also rather partial to Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising sequence and Gaelyn Gordon's Stonelight and Mindfire.

Favourite series would have to be The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson. Have read those books over and over.

I love Terry Pratchett, most of the time. I die laughing for the Wee Free Men.

I have to admit he got me reading again after working in a library and boring myself of books (yes, it is possible to read them all).

But I love Cadfael...love love love Cadfael. One of the greatest tragedies in my life was that the author passed away during the middle of the series while certain events had been alluded to. Okay, I'm all upset now...

Since I was 13, I watch the PBS series and read the books over and over...they're amazing. Why did she start writing in her 80s? Why not just oh, three or four decades earlier?

*sigh*

Wow... tough question. I absolutely love Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series, even though some of the middle books drag a bit. Wies & Hickman's "Dragonlance Trilogy" is pretty awesome. Of course, such a list is remiss not to mention "The Lord of the Rings". But you asked for my favorite of all time. That's hard to say... but I always think fondly back to Lloyd Alexander's "Prydain Chronicles" as the original motivation for making me into a writer. Plus, it's YA, which fits your theme here.

My favorite series would have to be Harry Potter. Yes, I know, technically not YA, though the last few books help to to at least qualify for that genre.

If I HAVE to pick a strictly YA series, then it's The Mortal Instruments, hands down.

Also, I was #50 and a quick shout out to my fellow iVoice folks! This is great, dahling, keep up the fantastic work.

Definately Terry Brook's Sword of Shannara series, they're among the first books to inspire my love of fantasy.

Tough choice, but it'll have to be Jean M. Auel's Earth Children series based in the Pleistocene era that follows the rise of one race of man and the fall of another through the adventures of one Cro-Magnon girl raised by Neanderthals.

Retweeted your contest tweet, will tweet separately about it tomorrow.

I have two favorite series, one of which almost nobody has ever heard of. The first is the Lucasfilm Alien Chronicles (not written by Lucas or dealing with Star Wars' universe at all, so I have no idea why his name is on it). Link to book 1: http://www.amazon.com/Golden-LucasFilms-Alien-Chronicles-Book/dp/0441005616

The other is the Chronicles of Narnia - which is probably a stock answer but I really do love them every time I read them.

Hands down, the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. I re-read it every year, strategically timing my start so that I'll be reading The Dark Is Rising itself over Christmas, even if I am here in sunny Australia!

Have to say Harry Potter. Liked the Narnia series when I was young but when I reread it, it didn't work so well for me. Harry, I'm confident, will be timeless.

DragonLance. Though mainly the original trilogy. The emotion and exploration of religion vs belief was a big up on the rest of the generic fantasy of it's time.

Will Christopher Baer's Phineas Poe Trilogy. The first book riffs on the 'Kidney Theft' urban legend. Throw in the requisite femme fatal, drugs, dodgy cops and faulty memory and you have pitch perfect neo-noir for the 21st Century. Sorry it ain't fantasy :)

hmm...favorite series of all time huh? Well I'd have to go with Harry Potter I think, but the Anne of Green Gables Series and the Boxcar Children series are pretty high up there.
